The Forest of Reading is Canada’s largest recreational reading program made up of eight different programs and run by the Ontario Library Association. (OLA) The programs target readers in kindergarten to grade twelve, with several programs geared to adult readers as well. The main objective of the Forest of Reading Program is to encourage a love of reading in people of all ages as well as to introduce students to the high quality of Canadian books available on the market today.
The program is unique in that it is the readers themselves who choose the winners of each category by voting for their favorite books. Awards are given in Toronto in May.
Reading categories are as follows:
Blue Spruce Award (K to 2; ages 4 to 7)
Silver Birch Award (Gr. 3 to 6; ages 8 to 12)
Red Maple Award (Gr. 7 to 8; ages 12 to 13)
A complete list of this year’s nominees can be found on the OLA’s website: https://www.accessola.org/
At this time, the books in the above mentioned categories have been ordered for our library. Teachers will be introducing these amazing selections and encouraging all students to begin reading in time for voting in April.
Also, for our budding artists, Mrs. Patt, our art teacher will be introducing the Forest of Reading Design Contest to those students interested in designing the art of the 2015 awards. Winning artwork will be presented to the winning authors and illustrators at the annual Festival of Trees in May. Winning artwork will also be presented on the Forest of Reading website and social media sites. See Mrs. Patt for further details.
