The grand finale! The seat of the federal government, where all the magic of legislation happens…the centre of political power…the place where (often questionable) decisions are made…but this isn’t the government’s building…members of parliament operate at the behest of the Canadian people..this is our building!
The building itself is an amazing work of architecture, tall, gothic and imposing yet at the same time warm and welcoming.
Once inside, past security (who confiscated my microphone!) , we were welcomed into the building and walked through a hall that contained a series of plaques that contained every single member of parliament that has ever sat in the House of Commons. This is where we were told that the Prime Minister is currently sitting in the House!
Unfortunately that information precluded us actually getting to visit the House of Commons…but the thought that we’re in the same building as the leader (in fact only a few meters away) of our country is a pretty profound, almost surreal, and definitely cool feeling!
We did however get a chance to visit the Parliamentary library, the only original structure of the building…it survived the great fire of 1916, which gutted everything else. We were not allowed to take pictures inside the library.
Funnily enough, the first book seen sitting on a table in the library was the Steve Jobs biography…apparently we have some apple geeks in Parliament!
